We performed for the Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo Day Programs this Wednesday morning and played a new song called ‘A White Sportcoat and a Pink Carnation,’ by Marty Robbins. While learning this song for this week’s shows, we learned that Robbins recalled writing this song in about 20 minutes while he was on the way to a venue where he was due to perform later that evening in Ohio. While on the road, he passed a high school where the students were dressed ready for their prom. This song reached number one on the U.S. country chart, becoming Marty Robbins’ third number one in his career. This song also reached number two on the Billboard pop chart in the U.S. and #1 in the Australian music charts in 1957. Here is a video clip of us performing the song:
